Motorsport has long been perceived as an exclusive arena, where tradition and masculinity dominate. For decades, the industry lacked diversity, particularly when it came to LGBTQ+ representation. When I came out as transgender in 2018, I knew I was stepping into a world that had rarely, if ever, encountered someone like me. The decision to come out publicly was not taken lightly. I was fully aware of the potential backlash, but I also recognized the importance of visibility for those who were struggling in silence.

The response from the motorsport community was mixed, but it opened up a conversation that was long overdue. I quickly realized that my journey wasn’t just about racing; it was about creating a space where everyone could feel seen and accepted. I partnered with organizations such as Stonewall and Racing Pride, which were instrumental in supporting LGBTQ+ athletes and advocating for inclusion in sports.

Through these collaborations, we launched initiatives aimed at educating teams, sponsors, and fans about the importance of diversity. I began speaking at events and conferences, sharing my story and the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in the sporting world. The support from the wider LGBTQ+ community was overwhelming, and it gave me the strength to push forward.

One of the proudest moments of my advocacy work was collaborating with Motorsport UK to develop guidelines for inclusivity. This was a significant step towards ensuring that the motorsport paddock became a welcoming place for everyone, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

Despite the progress, there is still much work to be done. Stereotypes and biases remain, but the dialogue has started, and that’s a victory in itself. For me, the mission is clear: to continue breaking down barriers and paving the way for the next generation of LGBTQ+ racers. I believe that with education, awareness, and support, we can make motorsport a sport for all.
